Administration Announces Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups sought a court injunction to prevent the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report argued that a funding lapse limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but not the beginning of the current month, since funding lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
