Delhi Awakens to Hazardous Smog Following Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" level.
Extremely High Air Quality Readings
Several parts of Delhi showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents ten times the safe level set by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x exceeding healthy levels.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Recent Changes
Since 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that covers the city as winter begins.
Yet earlier this year, the newly elected local government appealed to the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".
Judicial Decision and Enforcement
To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, judicial authorities approved the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during specific hours throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the designated hours across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Several air quality sensors throughout the city registered pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst readings observed during celebrations in at least three years.
Cross-Border Implications
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the celebrations.
Persistent Pollution Problem
The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have continued as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.
During Diwali, the concentration of toxic particles in the air has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once regarded as the world's most polluted city.
Various Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the capital is resulting from a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, rubbish burning and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating dangerous haze that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air sets in.
Health and Financial Consequences
Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million people living in the capital region is enormous, according to various studies.
The contaminated air results in high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 early mortalities each year in the capital.
