In a significant move, Walmart has begun implementing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during one shopping trip. This new rule officially takes effect starting November 5th, according to an internal announcement shared with employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer purchasing an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to proceed.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. However, the language has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could still purchase five premium Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Additionally, because the restriction is based on each visit, in theory a determined scalper could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.
The Scalping Phenomenon
For the average collector, this approach might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Some resellers seek to resell sealed items at a markup, while others search for valuable pulls that can command sky-high values. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set has been listed for over $800 on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
The new rule aligns with the imminent release of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and likely scalper target.
Hopefully, the retail limits will curb bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts alike.
